Small boats, big catch: the work of artisanal fishers
Along much of the coast, fishing is done from small wooden boats by crews who know the water intimately. Their knowledge is an undervalued resource.

Small-scale fishing feeds many coastal communities and employs far more people than industrial fleets. Crews often fish close to shore, with hand lines, gill nets and traps, and return the same day.
Fishers notice change early: species that arrive later in the season, catches that move further out, water that is warmer than it used to be. That observation, recorded carefully, is useful data.
From catch to income
What happens after landing matters as much as the catch itself. Ice, storage and access to markets decide how much of the value stays with the people who did the work.
